Infertility Treatment in Chinese Medicine

'Men and women beyond a certain age have no children.  Is it their power has run dry?  Or is it rather the effect of law fixed by Heaven?  The Su Wen, Chapter 1.

Fertility, or the lack thereof, has always been a concern of Chinese medicine.  For us in the West today, this interest provides us with new and innovative strategies in dealing with the often difficult issue of why seemingly healthy men and women cannot conceive.  These strategies have evolved in the context of an historic medicine with a keen observational bent.  We therefore have access to literally centuries of documentation from the best medical minds of their time, who in clinical practise charted the correlation between a huge varieties of signs and symptoms and disease patterns.  This leaves us in a situation today where we, as Chinese medical practitioner,  can open a new window of diagnosis and treatment on this difficult condition.

The various articles in this section are going to be looking at Chinese ideas behind infertility; its causes and treatment; the effects of diet in its treatment; and the exciting developments where Chinese and Western medicine have found common and productive ground in dealing with it.  Regardless of the medical paradigm, it seems the yearning to have a child where nature has failed to provide one, is the same everywhere.  Chinese medicine is but one point of contact for those out there who keenly feel this need.  For many it can provide the necessary support towards the ultimate goal of bringing a child into the world.  And where it is not successful on this route, hopefully it can provide support and understanding for this most difficult time of a different kind.
